AVIF to PNG, and the transparency case
The main reason to convert AVIF to PNG is transparency. That is the one thing PNG can do that JPEG cannot and that AVIF frequently carries. If you have an AVIF with an alpha channel and you need it in an application that reads PNG but not AVIF, this is the conversion.
PNG is lossless, so the pixels are preserved exactly as the AVIF decoded them — no additional quality loss. The file will be considerably larger, though: PNG of a photograph is often several times the size of the source AVIF.
When PNG is the wrong destination
- The image is a photograph and it has no transparency — JPEG will be far smaller.
- You are preparing it for the web — going back to AVIF or WebP would be more sensible than PNG.
- You are chasing file size — PNG will almost always be the largest option available.
