What AVIF buys you over JPEG
AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec, and it is the most efficient still-image format in wide use. Against JPEG at comparable quality, AVIF typically produces files 40–60% smaller — and unlike JPEG it supports transparency, wide colour gamuts and high dynamic range.
The reason to convert an existing JPEG is bandwidth: an image-heavy page can often be cut substantially in weight with no visible difference. The reason not to is compatibility, which is the next section.
The compatibility caveat
AVIF is supported in current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. Older browsers — including Safari before version 16 — cannot decode it at all and will show nothing. Never replace a working JPEG with AVIF as the only source; serve AVIF from a <picture> element with the JPEG as a fallback.
Encoding is slow, and that is the trade-off
AVIF takes noticeably longer to encode than JPEG or WebP — often several times longer for the same image. For a handful of images that is irrelevant. For a library of thousands, it is the reason many pipelines still generate WebP first and add AVIF only for their most-viewed images.
