Why rasterise an SVG, and what "rasterise" means
SVG stores shapes as maths: a circle is a centre, a radius and a stroke. PNG stores a grid of pixels. Converting between them is not a format swap like WebP to PNG — it is a rendering step, and it has to make decisions that SVG never had to make.
The main decision is size. An SVG has no intrinsic resolution; it is sharp at any scale. A PNG does not, so you must choose the pixel dimensions and the rendering resolution at export time. Export too small and it will look soft when displayed larger; export too large and the file is needlessly heavy.
Choosing the export size
Work backwards from how the image will be displayed. If it will sit in a 400-pixel-wide slot on a high-DPI screen, export at 800 pixels. If it is destined for print, aim for 300 DPI at the final printed size — a 2-inch logo needs about 600 pixels.
Things that commonly go wrong
- Text renders with a substitute font when the SVG references a font the renderer does not have — convert text to outlines in the source file if the exact typeface matters.
- Filters, blend modes and masks are the SVG features most likely to render differently or not at all.
- Transparency is preserved by PNG; if you need a solid background you must add it explicitly, or the image will have transparent areas.
- Keep the SVG. The PNG is a frozen, single-resolution copy and cannot be scaled back up cleanly.
