What actually changes when you convert JPEG to WebP
This is the most straightforward win in image compression: both formats are lossy and both are designed for photographs, so you are comparing two encodings of the same kind of content. At matched visual quality, WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than the equivalent JPEG.
WebP also adds something JPEG never had: an alpha channel. That matters when a photograph needs a transparent area, which previously forced you into PNG and a much larger file.
Do not convert twice
If your JPEG has already been compressed — which almost every JPEG has — converting to WebP does not undo that. The existing artefacts are carried across and re-encoded, and re-encoding a lossy image always loses a little more. The saving in file size is still real, but the image does not get better.
For the best result, go back to the original: convert from the camera raw, the PNG, or the PSD rather than from a JPEG that has already been through one compression pass.
Quality settings that matter
- Around 75 is the usual sweet spot for photographs — noticeably smaller than 90, with artefacts most people cannot see at normal viewing size.
- Below about 60, flat sky and smooth skin begin to show banding and blocking.
- If a photograph will be viewed full-screen on a high-DPI display, bump the quality up rather than down; the browser scaling hides less than you would expect.
