Converting backwards, and why you sometimes need to

AVIF gives the smallest files, but WebP is the safer format in practice: it has broader support, especially on slightly older browsers and in older image editing tools, and it is accepted by more content management systems and upload forms.

Moving from AVIF to WebP means re-encoding an already-lossy image, so a little quality is lost. You also lose the size advantage — expect the WebP to be larger than the AVIF it came from, sometimes by 20–40%.

When this conversion is the right call

• A CMS or upload form rejects AVIF but accepts WebP — still a very common restriction.
• You need to edit the image, and your editor does not open AVIF.
• You are standardising a mixed library on one format, and WebP is the one with the fewest compatibility surprises.

When it is not

If the image is already live on a page and the browser support is fine, leave it as AVIF. Converting to WebP only makes the file bigger. Reach for this conversion when something downstream refuses AVIF, not as a general tidy-up.
