The usual reason: something will not open AVIF

AVIF is the most efficient format here and the least universally supported. Plenty of software still cannot read it — older photo editors, document tools, some print workflows and a long tail of upload forms. Converting to JPEG is the reliable way out.

Expect the result to be substantially larger than the AVIF, often 1.5 to 2.5 times the size, because JPEG is simply a less efficient encoder.

What does not survive

AVIF can carry transparency, wide colour gamuts and high dynamic range. JPEG carries none of those. Transparency becomes a solid fill, wide-gamut colour is clipped to sRGB, and HDR is tone-mapped down. If any of those matter, convert to PNG for transparency or accept that the JPEG is an SDR reduction.

Check the result before you rely on it

Because AVIF files are often the product of an already-optimised pipeline, the JPEG you get back may look softer than you expect — you are encoding a second time. Compare the two side by side at 100% before shipping the JPEG anywhere that matters.
