AVIF as a PNG replacement
PNG is lossless and AVIF can be lossless too, but that is rarely the interesting comparison. The useful one is PNG against lossy AVIF for images that do not actually need to be lossless: photographs, hero images, rich illustrations. There, the saving is dramatic — often 60–80% smaller.
If the PNG is a screenshot or a diagram, use AVIF in lossless mode instead. You still typically beat PNG, and you keep every pixel identical.
What you lose
- Universal support — AVIF needs a current browser, so pair it with a PNG fallback in a <picture> element.
- Instant encoding — AVIF encoding is slow, so it is a poor fit for an interactive pipeline that converts on demand.
- Simplicity — a PNG always works. If the image is small already, the extra machinery may not be worth it.
