Why convert WebP back to PNG
WebP is the right format for delivering images on the web, and the wrong format for almost everything else. Converting to PNG is what you do when the image needs to leave the browser: pasting into a document, opening in an older desktop application, or handing it to someone whose tools do not read WebP.
PNG is lossless, so the conversion itself adds no new artefacts — but it cannot remove the ones already in the WebP. You get a faithful, larger copy of what you had, not a better one.
Expect the file to grow, sometimes a lot
A PNG of a photograph is frequently three to ten times the size of the WebP it came from. That is not the converter doing something wrong; it is the cost of lossless storage. If the image is a photograph and you only need a widely-readable format, JPEG is usually the better destination than PNG.
Which format to convert to
- Screenshot, diagram or logo with sharp edges and flat colour — PNG.
- Photograph, no transparency needed — JPEG. It will be dramatically smaller than PNG.
- Photograph that needs transparency — PNG is the safe choice; JPEG cannot store an alpha channel.
- You want to keep editing it — PNG, so repeated saves do not degrade it further.
