JPEG XL to WebP: moving from the better format to the supported one
JPEG XL is technically excellent — better compression than AVIF in many cases, lossless transcoding of existing JPEGs, and sensible progressive decoding. Its problem is adoption: browsers have been slow to ship it, and it was removed from Chrome’s roadmap before being reinstated as an optional feature.
WebP is the pragmatic destination. It is supported everywhere that matters, it handles both lossless and lossy content, and it supports transparency. The cost is file size: WebP is typically 20–40% larger than the JPEG XL it came from at matched quality.
What you keep and what you give up
- Kept: transparency, animation, lossless mode if you encode losslessly.
- Given up: JPEG XL’s size advantage, its lossless JPEG recompression trick, and its progressive rendering behaviour.
- Unchanged: the image content itself, up to the usual re-encoding loss.
