How to Convert Images to WebP
WebP gives you smaller image files with the same quality, but converting your images can feel like a chore. It doesn't need to be — here are five easy ways to convert to WebP.
1. Convert in your browser (fastest)
Use a free browser-based converter like our PNG to WebP or JPG to WebP tools. Upload, download, done. No software to install and no uploads to a server.
2. In Photoshop
Open your image, choose File → Export → Save for Web (Legacy), and pick WebP from the format dropdown. Photoshop also lets you set quality per output.
3. In GIMP
GIMP supports WebP natively. Open your image, choose File → Export As, select WebP as the file type, and adjust the quality slider in the dialog.
4. With cwebp (command line)
Google's cwebp tool converts in one command: cwebp -q 80 input.png -o output.webp. It's part of the libwebp package and available on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
5. Bulk convert on macOS or Linux
Loop over a folder with cwebp: for f in *.png; do cwebp -q 80 "$f" -o "${f%.png}.webp"; done. Automate your whole library in seconds.
The browser method is the fastest with zero setup. For batch work, cwebp is unbeatable. Either way, converting to WebP is the single easiest win for a faster website.
